Wallpaper Calculator: How Many Rolls Do I Need?

Work out how many rolls of wallpaper you need for a wall or a room, including the pattern repeat. Enter the wall size and the roll size, and the calculator gives you the number of rolls to buy.

How this calculator works

Wall area is total wall length multiplied by height. One roll covers its width multiplied by its length; a standard roll is 20.5 inches wide and 33 feet long, covering about 56 square feet. Pattern repeat reduces the usable length, because each strip must be cut to match the pattern, so an extra roll is recommended when the repeat is over 12 inches. Always round up, buy from the same batch, and keep a spare roll for repairs.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

Divide the wall area by the coverage of one roll, and round up. Add an extra roll if the pattern repeat is over 12 inches.

What is pattern repeat?

The vertical distance after which a wallpaper pattern repeats. A large repeat wastes more paper, because each strip must be cut to match the pattern.

How much does one roll of wallpaper cover?

A standard roll, 20.5 inches by 33 feet, covers about 56 square feet before pattern matching. Check the roll you are buying, because sizes vary.

Should I buy extra wallpaper?

Yes. Buy at least one extra roll for pattern matching and future repairs, and make sure all rolls are from the same batch number.
